Some people ask, “Is adoption paperwork as bad as ‘they’ say it is?” The candid answer is, “yes!”. Not only is the tedium of collecting documents, writing documents, certifying documents and authenticating documents extremely time consuming, but it is costly! Watch out for your UPS or FedEx bill!
Please, by all means, get a good laugh at our expense (no pun intended), out of the UPS journey of ONE of our documents, to state certification – Tom’s employment letter. Remember, this only reflects SHIPPING costs, not processing fees!
- notarized once – wrong date on document
- notarized a second time – What? Another mistake?
- notarized a third time – beautiful
- shipped via UPS to state capital for state certification – $10 – notary cannot be found on state registry? What? Oh, a type-o in the NJ registry. Gotcha.

- notarized a fourth time by a DIFFERENT notary
- shipped back to state capital – $10

- UPS driver claims to have delivered document to our garage. What??????? Never received it.

- Notarized a fifth time – Lisa, how could we EVER thank you enough for your trips to the banks!
- Sent back to state capital via UPS – $10
- Sent back to us CERTIFIED with prepaid air bill! – $13

Lessons learned: 1. God’s ways are not our ways. 2. ALWAYS use FedEx.
